Iceland volcano - emergency declared as lava sets town on fire

Iceland’s prime minister has declared a national emergency after erupting lava engulfed a nearby town. Molten material has entered the fishing town of Grindavik, causing several houses to catch fire. Evacuation orders were issued by authorities the day before, prompting the last residents to evacuate.

In a televised address to the nation, President Gidni Johansson urged Icelanders to unite and show compassion for those displaced from their homes. Prime Minister Katrin Jakobsdottir acknowledged the gravity of the situation, calling it a “dark day” for Grindavik and the entire nation. Despite the challenges, he expressed hope, saying, “It may be dark today, but the sun will rise again. Together we will overcome this crisis and any challenges ahead.
