As Samuel Goldwyn reportedly remarked in 1945, “That A-bomb—that’s dynamite!” Christopher Nolan’s epic historical biopic, Oppenheimer, heads into awards season with 13 BAFTA nominations. Starring Cillian Murphy as nuclear weapons war architect, J. Robert Oppenheimer, the film depicts his intense journey, fueled by America’s urgency to develop the bomb in the face of the Nazis. . It explores Oppenheimer’s fascination with the dark excitement of the Trinity’s successful test in the New Mexico desert and his subsequent preoccupation with the burden of guilt and horror after the war.

BAFTA voters have enthusiastically embraced the film’s scale, ambition and gravitas, in keeping with a trend seen in last year’s BAFTA nominations, which have seen war narratives on the Western Front as worthy of such prestige as All Quiet. Liked more.

In another notable feat, German star Sandra Hüller earned well-deserved recognition, earning a Best Actress nomination for her stunning lead performance in Justin Tritt’s courtroom drama, Anatomy of a Fall. Here, she portrays a fashionable writer on trial for her husband’s alleged murder. Additionally, Hüller earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Jonathan Glazer’s intense Holocaust nightmare, The Zone of Interest, where she plays the jealous wife of an Auschwitz camp commandant. The film explores themes of denial, guilt, and shame, drawing an interesting comparison with Oppenheimer.

Martin Scorsese’s horror true-crime film, Colors of the Flower Moon, commands the attention of awards voters, although its stars Lily Gladstone and Leonardo DiCaprio are overlooked in the acting category. The film delves into the theme of genocide, offering a chilling account of the mass killing of the Osage people in the early 20th century to undermine their oil claims. Alexander Payne’s 70s drama, The Holdover, also makes a strong showing.

, in which BAFTA lead actor nominee Paul Giamatti gained attention, especially after becoming a social media sensation following his Golden Globes win. Her portrayal of the grumpy boarding school teacher resonated with audiences, and a BAFTA win could lead to a celebratory meal at her beloved In-N-Out Burger restaurant in LA, and perhaps a Nando’s afterwards.

However, notable omissions are evident, with only three nods for Celine Song’s Past Lives, a perceived oversight, especially considering its absence from the Best Picture and Best Director categories. . Emerald Fennell’s Bridehead 2.0 psycho-thriller, Saltburn, matches Barbie with five nominations but doesn’t quite show her influence, often criticized for allegedly being her own Tatler- The mag is uncritically and unironically obsessed with poshness. Despite such feedback, the film is directed and shot with gusto, earning Rosamond Pike a Best Supporting Actress nod for her portrayal of Saltburn’s beautiful and troubled chatelaine.

The spirit of the Baftas has always been in the Outstanding British Film and Outstanding British Debut categories, and Molly Manning is well-rewarded in both Walker’s fantastic How to Have Sex – but don’t see anything for Glenda Jackson and Michael Caine in The Great Me I was sad. Escaper , nor anything of Sam H. Freeman and Ng Chun-ping’s charming psychodrama fame.

So the mystery awards think consensus is converging around a single film and that is Oppenheimer. Yet maybe The Zone of Interest and Killers of the Flower Moon will split the “serious” vote with Nolan’s film – and Poor Things and Emma Stone, in all their passive insanity, will clear the night.

Oppenheimer beats Barbie as Bafta nominations announced

bafta film awards 2024

Christopher Nolan, one of the most commercially and critically successful British directors in decades, looks set for his first BAFTA win next month. The anticipation follows his latest film “Oppenheimer” being nominated in an impressive 13 categories.

The film was nominated for Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Leading Actor (Celine Murphy), Supporting Actress (Emily Blunt), Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Cinematography, Editing, Costume Design, Makeup and Hair, Original Score, Nominations have been received for Production design, and sound. In particular, it was overlooked in the visual effects category.

Despite winning a Britannia Award from BAFTA in 2010 and eight previous nominations for films such as “Dunkirk” and “Inception”, Nolan, 53, is yet to win a BAFTA or an Oscar. The Academy Award shortlist for this year will be announced next Tuesday, and as of today, Nolan has five nominations.

Following closely behind, Yorgos Lanthimos’ steampunk fantasy, “Poor Things,” took second place with 11 nominations, including best picture, adapted screenplay, and recognition for Emma Stone’s outstanding performance. However, co-stars Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe were not mentioned.

Stone will be up against Margot Robbie (Barbie), Carey Mulligan (Maestro), Sandra Hiller (Anatomy of a Fall), Fantasia Barino (The Color Purple) and Rae Lane’s Vivian Oprah. Notably missing from the list are Greta Lee from “Past Lives” and Lily Gladstone from “Colors of the Flower Moon,” both considered strong contenders.

BAFTA chair Sarah Pitt commented on this year’s competition, saying, “It’s a very competitive year. Who do we take off the list?”

While Greta Gerwig’s spoof “Day Glow” eventually surpassed “Oppenheimer” at the box office with $1.4 billion, Nolan’s film is on the verge of entering the billion-dollar club, an awards-season re-release. Thanks (currently at $953 million).

In addition to nominations for Margot Robbie’s performance, “Barbie” is in contention for best original screenplay, supporting actor (Ryan Gosling), costume design, and production design. However, this is a notable drop from the 15 mentions it received when the BAFTA longlist was revealed two weeks ago.

Earlier this week, Culture Secretary Lucy Fraser praised the production, which was filmed extensively at Leavesden Studios, stressing that “Barbie” could become the biggest-selling film of 2023 worldwide. Originally made and recorded in Hertfordshire, not Hollywood.

Warner Bros., the studio behind the film, reported that “Barbie” contributed £80 million in direct spending to the local economy, created 685 jobs, including more than 6,000 extras, supported 754 local businesses. , and paid over £40 million in local wages.

Surprisingly, directors Greta Gerwig, Celine Song of “Past Life” and Emerald Fennell of “Saltburn” were not included in the shortlist. “Anatomy of a Fall” director Justine Trier is the only woman in contention. Other nominees are Jonathan Glazer for “The Zone of Interest,” Andrew Hague for “All of Us Strangers,” Bradley Cooper for “Maestro” and Alexander Payne for “The Holdovers.” None of these directors have won before, and Martin Scorsese is another surprising omission from the list.

In terms of gender representation, last year saw just one woman among director nominees, down from three in 2022 and four in 2021. Bafta responded to the 2020 #BaftasSoWhite backlash by introducing backstage changes in 2021 to improve inclusion. Sarah Pitt acknowledges the challenges, saying, “We know it’s not a level playing field. The odds are stacked. Out of the 100 highest-grossing films released last year, only 12 were made by women. were.” While the BAFTA longlist aims for gender parity in the director category, Pitt stressed that BAFTA is not about quotas.

Despite the gender disparity on the Best Director shortlist, Pitt paints a slightly more optimistic picture, with 11 of the 32 total director nominations going to women, including short films and documentaries. However, he acknowledged that there is still a long way to go.

Overall, the best picture nominees — “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Holdovers,” “Colors of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things” — are among superhero cinema’s current push for auteur cinema. Offer certification for champions. Movies

Next Friday marks the release of Haigh’s Extraordinary Past Story, a partially autobiographical narrative that depicts the experiences of a gay child during the early days of the AIDS epidemic. A week later, Glaser’s experimental Auschwitz drama is set to debut.

Fennell’s widely discussed black comedy, “Saltburn,” earned a leading actor nomination for Barry Keoghan, along with supporting nods for Rosamond Pike and Jacob Alverdi. Keoghan faces Murphy from “Oppenheimer,” Cooper from “Maestro,” Coleman Domingo for “Ruston,” Teo Yu for “Past Lives” and Paul Giamatti for “The Holdovers.” A strong contender this year, Giamatti has a Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award.

Notably absent from the nominations is Andrew Scott for Andrew High’s acclaimed “We’re All Strangers,” though co-star Claire Foy for “The Color Purple” is up in the supporting actress category alongside Blunt, Hiller, Pike, Danielle Brooks. Got the place. Da’Vine Joy Randolph for “The Holdovers.” Randolph is widely expected to emerge victorious, having already claimed a number of equivalent prizes.

Newcomer Dominic Sesa, who co-starred in “All of Us Strangers,” faces stiff competition in the supporting actor race, with “We’re All Strangers” Downey Jr., Gosling, Paul Mescale and “Colors of “The” featuring Robert De Niro. Flower Moon”—a BAFTA nominee with eight previous nominations, the same as Nolan and Giamatti.

However, there were disappointments for “American Fiction,” Cord Jefferson’s comedy, which earned only a nomination for adapted screenplay, and Michael Mann’s biopic “Ferrari,” which received a lone nod for voice. received

Todd Haynes’ drama “May December,” starring Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman, received no nominations.

Last year, Edward Berger’s anti-war epic, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” won seven BAFTAs, including best picture. Cate Blanchett and Austin Butler won Best Actress and Best Actor respectively. The Oscars held three weeks later saw Michelle Yeoh and Brendan Fraser win equal categories, while “Everything Everyone Woreer All At Once” dominated with seven Oscars.

Despite the differences, there is significant overlap between BAFTA’s 7,800 members and the Oscars’ 10,000 voters. Hosted for the first time by David Tennant, the event is scheduled for February 18 at London’s Southbank Centre. The Oscars will be held on March 10.
