Actor Carl Weathers, best known for his roles in Rocky, Predator and The Mandalorian, has died at the age of 76, his family announced in a statement Friday. Weathers “died peacefully in his sleep” on Thursday, February 1, according to Deadline and Variety.
The family is deeply saddened, describing Carl as an extraordinary individual who led an extraordinary life. In the statement, he acknowledged his significant contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, which have had a lasting impact globally and across generations. Family remembered him as a loving brother, father, grandfather, colleague and friend.
.A former NFL linebacker, Weathers rose to fame for his role as boxer Apollo Creed in the Rocky films, beginning with the 1976 original. He also starred opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987’s Predator. Most recently, Weathers received an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Griff Karga in the Star Wars series The Mandalorian.
In 1988, he played the lead role in Action Jackson, demonstrating his versatility as an actor. Additionally, he delivered memorable comedic performances, portraying Chubbs in the 1996 golf comedy Happy Gilmore opposite Adam Sandler. Moreover, he played a fictionalized version of himself in the television series Arrested Development.

Born in New Orleans, Weathers shared with the newspaper Gambit that he developed a passion for performing in his early years, actively participating in plays.
Reflecting on his connection to the stage, he said in 2020, “I was bitten by the bug, as they say. Inside you, it’s hard to give up.”
That same year, Weathers spoke to British GQ about his views on the difference between being a “movie star” and an “actor”.
“According to Carl Weathers,, the status of being a movie star is not necessarily a manifestation of one’s skill as a truly talented actor or artist.
