Brian Barzek, a YouTube herpetologist loved by more than 5 million subscribers, died Sunday. He was 54 years old.
The cause was stage 4 inoperable pancreatic cancer, a representative from Reptarium, Barczek’s Reptile Zoo, confirmed to top trend. Barzek initially shared his diagnosis with his followers in a March 2023 video.
Barzek describes aspects of his cancer journey on his YouTube channel. On January 5, he uploaded a closing video, revealing his admission to hospice care.

In the heartwarming video, Brian Barzek expresses his constant desire to “create experiences and opportunities for people to love animals.”
Known for his informative videos on a diverse range of reptiles, ranging from snakes to fish, Barzek was a featured personality on the Discovery show “Venom Hunters.”
Jay Tingle, head of education at The Reptarium and the upcoming LegaSea Aquarium, expressed his gratitude for the stories in which Brian positively impacted so many lives. “Obviously times are going to be different as we move forward, but we’re committed to making him proud every day,” Tingle remarked in an email.
Brian Barczak’s legacy lives on through his son Noah, who has taken charge of the channel since Barczak entered hospice. Noah acknowledged in an emotional email that no one can replace his father, but vowed to serve as a conduit to keep his message alive. “Our whole team will try to make you proud, Dad,” Noah confirmed.
News of Barzek’s death prompted an outpouring of support and condolences from fans on his social media platforms. Jay Tomsky, Barczek’s best friend and creative director of The Reptarium and Lega Sea Aquarium, thanked them for their tremendous support during these difficult times.

“It’s truly a blessing to have so many people behind us,” Tomsky remarked in an email, summing up the collective feelings of gratitude and determination to continue honoring Brian Barzek’s inspiring legacy.
In 2018, Barczyk founded The Reptarium, an interactive reptile zoo located in Michigan. At the same time, he embarked on an ambitious effort to build a new aquarium called LegaSea, a project that is still ongoing.

Barzek is survived by his wife Lori and their children Noah and Jade. Since Barczak entered hospice, his son Noah has taken over the reins of the channel.
“No one can replace him, and it’s impossible even if you try,” Noah Barzek said in an email. “But we can act as a conduit to keep his message alive. I assure you, our entire team will try to make you proud.”
